Toward the end of his second letter to Timothy, Paul lists men who have impacted his ministry for better or worse. Against one man, Demas, Paul levels a grim accusation – he loved this world.  In today’s sermon, Demas’ love of the present age and his resulting choice are contrasted with the attitude and will of a hero of the faith from Hebrews 11 – Moses.

The early church was prepared to pay a high cost for being bold in their faith. Amid waves of persecution, Paul the prisoner implores Timothy to not be ashamed of him or the Gospel. The time for courage was at hand, much like today. We too can be encouraged by the apostle’s reminder to not be ashamed.
